about this workshop

A tronie (16/17th-century Dutch for “face”) is a common type, or group of types, of works common in Dutch Golden Age painting and Flemish Baroque painting that shows an exaggerated facial expression or a stock character in costume.

Join Charles Miano on an expressive exploration of character and costume in his unique classical approach to portrait painting.

Miano will highlight his special Sprezzatura Style of painting  which distinguishes his work as both studied and bold.

He will show artists his “Golden age” Palette mixtures for creating life-like portraits in oil in the grand manner of Rembrandt and the Old Masters.

What makes my figure drawing unique is that I am more inspired by the Renaissance Italians rather than the French academics. In other words, gestures and movement are a big part of my approach. Freer and looser starts combined with accuracy and integrity of structures. I will be teaching people how to block in the basic shapes and structures of the figure from a model starting with quick gestures and moving to longer poses. We will practice how to start with the simplest interpretation of the big gesture lines and masses of the model and then move to capturing shape articulation and anatomy. I lean heavily into the anatomy of the figure. We will cover the osteology, myology and morphology during our longer pose set ups. Light effect and modeling will also play an important role.
