about this workshop

This is an intensive workshop of two days of guided drawing from a live model (female one day, male the other).
We want to put a focus on the importance of drawing. Getting the drawing correct for any piece of art is paramount for a successful end result.

This workshop is aimed at people who want to spend a period of time immersed in the practice of observational drawing with a view toward improving their skills and gaining a better understanding of the fundamental principles of drawing.

materials

Newsprint and cartridge paper

Participants should bring their own drawing materials, whatever they are comfortable with using, but please ensure you have materials that can make a variety of different types of marks, and a broad range of tones (very dark to very light). For example: soft pencils, charcoal pencils, compressed charcoal etc. We will be using dry media only. You are also welcome to bring along other types of paper if you would prefer to work on different surfaces.

Meet alan

Alan Clarke is a sculptor and illustrator. He was born into a family of artists, and first became a commercial illustrator, before gradually evolving into fine art and then into sculpture. From the outset his work focused on the human form, in it's endless variety and complexity. Sculpting from life in clay, his work is energetic but sensitive. He combines a knowledge of materials and anatomy with an in-depth understanding of drawing, design, and three dimensional form. He has worked and taught in studios in Ireland, Italy, England, Spain, Canada and Russia. His award winning work has been exhibited all over the world, and a large collection is held in the national collection by the National Library in Ireland. He is the only Irish member of the Society of Portrait Sculptors. He gives regular sculpture workshops, and is a drawing tutor at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin.
