ABOUT THIS COURSE

This workshop introduces the art of Mokuhanga (Japanese woodblock printing).

Participants will work towards completing an edition of Mokuhanga prints over three days.

The workshop will provide an in depth understanding of multi-block Japanese relief printing, from translating ideas and transferring images onto the wood block with precise registration to understanding the various carving tools and techniques, paper preparation, blotting paper, mixing paints, the printing process and drying the prints. Participants will become versed in a broad range of aspects related to Mokuhanga, from Japanese paper and its properties, various materials specialised for Mokuhanga, to elements of history and culture related to Japanese printmaking.

Justin Larkin is a trained printmaker, he graduated as a Master from The Royal College of Art, London and completed his Bachelor’s Degree at The National College of Art and Design in Ireland. He obtained his skills and knowledge in Japanese printmaking in 2017 at the Mokuhanga Innovation Laboratory Artist in residence program. He has continuously explored this technique and used it for his own practice and teaching while living and working in Hong Kong.

He has presented and demonstrated Japanese prints at the IMPACT 11 International Printmaking Conference, SUMI-Fusion Mokuhanga exhibition, Awagami International Print Exhibition and exhibited at The Hong Kong Heritage Museum.

About Justin

Justin received his MA in printmaking from the Royal College of Art London (2011) and acquired BA in printmaking from the National College of Art and Design in Ireland (2009).

Larkin’s art practice utilises a variety of media which include painting, sculpture, print, book arts and installation. Themes related to time, place, narrative, sense and understanding, as well as themes of nature and technology. Larkin’s works are often imbued with a quite sense and stillness or emptiness accentuated with an emphasis on nature.

He currently lives and works in Ireland.
